In March 2014 Australia will be facing two state elections. Both Tasmania and South Australia are going to the polls.
The governments of both states have been incumbent for over 10 years so if there is a change of party many key bureaucratic positions and agency structures can expect substantial change.
Companies doing business in these states will need to track these changes as suppliers did after previous state elections in both NSW and Queensland.
South Australia
The Australian Labor Party which is currently led by Premier Jay Weatherill, will be challenged by the opposition Liberal Party of Australia, currently led by Opposition leader Steven Marshall.
The last state election was held on 20th March 2010 to elect members for the House of Assembly and half of the members in the Legislative Council.
South Australia has fixed four-year terms, and elections must be held on the third Saturday in March every four years.
Tasmania
The next Tasmanian state electionwill also to be held on 15th March to elect all 25 members to the House of Assembly.
The Labor government which is currently led by the Premier of Tasmania Lara Giddings, will try to win a fifth consecutive term against the Liberal opposition, led by Opposition Leader Will Hodgman. The Greens are also in the running currently led by Nick McKim.
The 2014 South Australian state election will occur on the same day for the third time in a row.
